Statistics show that homeless people demonstrate worse physical and emotional health status than the general population. Chronic homelessness is characterized by tri-morbidity. Meaning, the homeless community is more likely to suffer from a trifecta of mental health issues, physical illness, and substance abuse all at the same time.
This leads to rates of mortality in the homeless population that are higher than those in comparison to the general population. The numbers are staggering, over 650,000 homeless in the US, with around 31% percent of those people suffering from mental illnesses for which they can't even receive treatment or help. And this also leads to the perpetual cycle of a homeless person remaining homeless whether they want to or not.
This is why a sustainable solution that tackles the root cause of homelessness on a person by person case is so critical. If we can help rebuild people from the roots up giving them much needed support, both physically and mentally, we can begin to SOLVE homelessness instead of just offering temporary solutions.
